President's Notes, March 2019

Dear TiE DC Friends:

I am happy to inform our community that we are getting a lot of traction and energy from our Members, Charter Members and truly diligent Board of Directors, for meeting the goals we set for ourselves this year.  With regard to our goal of planning events that are truly meaningful to the TiE DC community – we have a full calendar of events planned and we are rolling it out for registration as soon as we are ready with all the details.

In February, we did the opening kick-off of The Young Entrepreneurs (TYE) Boot Camp for 8 weeks. Our new model of parent engagement and payment for the service to TiE-DC, to encourage commitment and improve quality of participation, has proven more successful.  This activity with (TYE) has been highly applauded by the TiE community, and we are looking forward to the final competition and Award Event in April.

Our March TiE Tuesday on Emerging Technology was highly informative and energized event, which was fully sold to capacity for our venue. The discussion on how the Blockchain, Cybersecurity, Drones, Imaging Technology, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning are changing the way government and other large organizations are modernizing their operating systems.  Most interesting to our participants was the learning about the future opportunities for these technology providing entrepreneurs.

We introduced the new event concept of the TiE DC Charter Member (CM) Power Lunch, the first one of four was held on the topic of TiE Angel Investing.  This event was not only very well attended but did generate a lot of interest from our CMs in creating our own TiE DC Angel Investing community, along with participating in the TiE Global Angel Investment.  We look forward to the next CM Power Lunch in June and also the related Shark Tank event later this year to showcase potential start-up companies for investing.

In April, we are looking forward to seeing many of you at the wonderful cultural event that TiE DC’s is sponsoring for the famous Arijit Singh Concert.

Project AIRSWEEE 'All-India Road Show on Women's Economic Empowerment through Entrepreneurship,' announced the launch of AIRSWEEE 2.0, TiE Global's new program to unleash value creation amongst aspiring young women in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities in India. Our chapter is exploring opportunities for our members and community to get involved in this new initiative.  We will keep you posted as they develop.

Once again, I cannot thank all the Board members enough for their hard work to develop meaningful programming for this year to foster connections and enable insights for growing businesses. Please join me in thanking each of them for their dedication and time.

I am pleased to inform you that we are inching forward in our number of members and charter members each week. We hope to have more new members join in the fun! I appreciate the involvement and engagement of all the existing members and charter members – please continue bringing us ideas and your active participation to make TiE DC a great platform for exchanging ideas for our personal and professional growth.

Happy Spring to you and looking forward to meeting and connecting soon!

Best wishes,
Dr. Smita Siddhanti
TiE DC President

Charter Member Power Luncheon

Charter Members (CM) gathered for a networking lunch and an opportunity to learn more about the TiE Global Angel Alliance (TGAA). Knowledgeable  CM speakers, Raj Rai, Paul Singh, Prem Bajaj and Sundi Natarajan shared their experience with Angel investing In Technology Ventures and TGAA.  There were 20 CMs in attendance and the vibrant discussion clearly demonstrated a great interest in creating a mechanism to fund startups and additionally to bring our collective expertise in government client space.  We also discussed hosting a Shark Tank-like event later this year where invited Charter Member investors and technology industries will have the opportunity to interact and potentially gain further exposure to the TiE Global Angel Alliance investing community.  A small subcommittee is formed to take the next steps. If any of you are interested in joining this initiative, please contact Board Members Raj Rai and Sundi Natarajan.

In brief, 2018 has been a very active year for TiE Global Angels. TGAA hosted 10 separate investor calls, leading to $295,000 in additional funding for companies beyond investment from their local TiE chapters. In 2016 and 2017, TGAA have demonstrated the viability of a platform for cross-chapter investing. Since their pilot launch in 2016, TGAA has held 13 separate investor calls for companies across many different industries. TGAA are industry agnostic, although their recent activity has skewed towards medical technology and devices. TiE Global Angels seek to exploit the knowledge and experience of over 280 registered TGAA members from 35 chapters worldwide.
